Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Dec 14 2021

If your teeth aren’t as sparkling as you’d like them to be and you’ve been thinking about a professional teeth whitening, the good news is that teeth whitening is completely safe in most cases. In fact, even though a professional teeth whitening is usually more effective and safer, even most over-the-home teeth whitening kits, gels, and strips are safe to use, as are most natural methods. Consider the following about different types of teeth whitening methods and what the safest and best option may be—

Types of Teeth Whitening

There are two different ways to whiten your teeth: at home or professionally.

  • Professional whitening. A professional whitening service is usually the ideal way to whiten teeth, although it is more expensive than over-the-home options. A professional whitening is quick—you can enjoy noticeably whiter teeth in a single visit. A professional teeth whitening is also highly effective, and can be more tailored to your preferences for just how white you want your teeth to be. Because a professional bleaching will also be done by a licensed dentist, you can also count on this type of whitening to be safe. Most professional bleaching services use either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.
  • Over-the-counter whitening. There are numerous different over-the-counter whitening options, including toothpastes, gels, strips, trays, chewing gum, and oral rinses! There are also natural teeth-whitening options, such as brushing teeth with baking soda or charcoal at home. While most of these options are safe when used in moderation (too much bleaching can be dangerous), they are not nearly as effective as a professional whitening service.

How to Safely Whiten Teeth

If you are going to try an at-home option, it’s important to follow the instructions and to not exceed the recommended amount of time that the whitening solution is applied and to not exceed the recommended frequency of whitening. This is because too much whitening can lead to loss of enamel, which makes you more susceptible to cavities and tooth decay.

As mentioned above, though, the most effective and the safest way to whiten teeth is to get professional teeth whitening.
