What to Do About Your Partner’s Snoring

Apr 17 2023

With an estimated 45% of adults snoring, there is a high chance that you are dealing with a partner that snores. A snoring partner is no small issue. Their noise can interrupt your sleep and keep you awake at night. A quality night of sleep is one of the foundations for a healthy life. If you aren’t getting the quality sleep you need, it can lead to a lack of energy, fatigue, relationship conflict, and other health concerns. If your partner snores it may seem like you are fighting a losing battle, but there are some actions you can take that will help get you (and your partner) on the road to better sleep! Try these tips below, and remember, if all else fails, call your local dentist at Distinctive Dental Solutions!

Body Positioning– if your partner suffers from snoring and wakes you up at night, a simple change of position may help. If your partner sleeps on their back, it is likely the base of their tongue has collapsed against the back wall of their mouth, and this can contribute to snoring. To fix the issue, roll your partner onto their side. This will keep their tongue from collapsing and help prevent snoring. To try and keep them from rolling back throughout the night, you can place a pillow along their back.

Pillow Use– another way to use pillows to combat a partner’s snores is to elevate them. Using large pillows for your partner to sleep with will prop them up to help alleviate snoring.

Cleaning– it is important to regularly wash your pillowcases and other bedding to combat dust and allergens that can build up and contribute to blocking your partner’s airways. This blockage often causes or increases snoring.

White noise– consider getting a white noise machine. White noise is a neutral sound that can help drown out the snoring with a sound that is easier for some to fall asleep to. There are also many apps available now on your smartphone, so you won’t even need to purchase a machine.

Ear plugs– if you are the type of person that can’t sleep with any sound, then a white noise machine probably won’t work for you. The next option would be earplugs. They can help cancel out other sounds and maybe your best bet. Try wearing these to bed to eliminate your partner’s snoring.
