Why Are My Gums Bleeding?

Jun 8 2022

Did you know that what’s going on in your mouth can be a good indication of your overall health? Which is why if your gums are bleeding, it’s important to identify the root cause and, in some cases, see a dentist as soon as possible. The following reviews some of the most common causes of bleeding gums, as well as what to do if bleeding is persistent or excessive.

Common Causes of Bleeding Gums

There are numerous reasons why gums may bleed, some of them more concerning than others—

  • Brushing or flossing too aggressively. Sometimes, bleeding gums are simply caused by flossing or brushing too aggressively. This is especially common if you haven’t been brushing or flossing consistently and your gums aren’t used to the activities. Usually, this will go away with consistency and lightening up the amount of pressure you apply.
  • Gingivitis. Gingivitis refers to inflammation of the gums. While gingivitis is correctable, it can be a warning sign of a more serious gum disease. You should see a dentist immediately.
  • Use of certain medications. Some medications, such as blood thinners, may increase the risk of gums bleeding when you brush or floss.
  • Pregnancy. With pregnancy, there are a lot of changes to the body. One of those changes is the increased risk of gingivitis, sometimes called pregnancy gingivitis. If your gums are bleeding and you’re pregnant and this is something you haven’t experienced before, you should talk to your dentist.
  • Dietary choices. Some foods can irritate gums and cause them to bleed. The best thing that you can do for your oral health and your overall health is to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet.
  • Poor-fitting dentures. If dentures don’t fit correctly, they could cause irritation that leads to bleeding.
  • Faulty dental procedures/restorations. A dental procedure or restoration that isn’t performed correctly could lead to bleeding. If this is the case, you should schedule an appointment with a cosmetic dentist for correction as soon as possible.

Call a Dentist if You Have Bleeding Gums

If your gums are bleeding and you suspect a cause other than just brushing or flossing too aggressively, you should call your dentist. It’s important to get regular dental care to maintain good oral health. In some cases, bleeding gums could be a sign of something more serious.
